Haag’s Schtruwwelpitter is a faithful rendering of Heinrich Hoffmann’s original, staying close to the German text but also conveying its spirit in a most congenial way. As is most fitting for a trans-cultural translation, in many passages Haag strove to give his verses a distinct Pennsylvania Dutch flair so as to situate the stories in a PG cultural environment.

The dialect “Der Alt Professer” uses is that of his generation of “non-sectarian” speakers of PG. Within the framework of this variety, Haag’s translation is a fine example of traditional literary Pennsylvania German in the footsteps of the great Pennsylvania German poets Moll, Birmelin and Funk.

The publication of this book is a combined effort of the “Verein für Deutsche Kulturbeziehungen im Ausland e.V. (VDA),” the German-Pennsylvanian Association (DPAK), and the publisher.
